Introduction: Revitalizing Temple Bar: A Community’s Commitment to Positive Change

Quirky businesses, eclectic streets, and lashings of historical charm appear to have combined quite early on to make Temple Bar the cultural heartbeat of Dublin—a place dear to many, both locals and tourists. However, this also means that it shares the many problems that come along with such energetic inner-city areas, which require joined community efforts to solve.

Consequent to the problems the neighborhood has faced, committed business owners, residents, and local leaders, under the umbrella of Aston Quay and Temple Bar Business and Residents’ Alliance, have taken action to improve neighborhood safety and vibrancy, as well as community-based collaboration and advocacy.

The Challenges Faced by Temple Bar and Aston Quay

Highlights from the Survey: What’s Real on the Ground

In a six-week study of the safety concerns in Temple Bar, the Alliance was able to gather a total of 458 questionnaires completed by employees and residents of local business owners; the findings were startling:

  • Of those interviewed, 74 percent stated they felt unsafe or unsafe in the area.
  • An astounding 85% indicated evidence of drug-related incidents.
  • While property crimes, including vandalism and verbal abuse, were reported by almost 40% of respondents.

These alarming statistics show that what is urgently needed are practical solutions with immediate effects, a sentiment strongly echoed at the Alliance’s meeting on October 22nd.

Taking Action: The Aston Quay and Temple Bar Alliance

From Formation to Advocacy

Formed over a year ago, the Alliance represents:

  • 47 local businesses,
  • The Temple Bar Residents’ Association,
  • Management companies from seven apartment buildings.

Chaired by Stephen Kennedy of Copper + Straw, the Alliance is a single-issue group focused on combating open drug dealing and antisocial behavior. It has an inclusive structure, drawing equal representation from businesses and residents so all voices are heard.

Solutions Proposed: Safer Streets and Stronger Communities

The recent meeting that occurred within the Alliance showcased some highly proactive proposals, such as:

  • A special task force of the Gardaí to combat drug-related activities.
  • CCTV installations and improved street lighting to help reduce antisocial behavior.
  • Urban improvements, such as back-lane regeneration, greenery, and community art.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, James Geoghegan, commended these initiatives and pledged to elevate the concerns to senior Garda leadership while advocating for collaborative solutions.

Momentum and progress have both been recorded with regard to positive changes taking place in Temple Bar.

How Pedestrianization and Urban Renewal Boosted the Area

Recent urban enhancements are already making a difference. For example, pedestrianization of sections of Aston Quay has increased the number of pedestrians, thereby making the city more agreeable for locals and guests alike to stay in.

These complement the Alliance’s vision of a safer, more vibrant Temple Bar and also show what can be done through collaborative actions.
